Il Dottore

Il Dottore may have developed later than Pantalone, but he still carries the same lust for women as Pantalone does coupled with the same impotency. The distinguishing characteristic about Il Dottore is his incredible mouth. Il Dottore can talk about anything for hours on end. He claims to know everything when, in truth, he is improvising every word of what he says. His Motivations include food, sex, and a need for others to consider him intellectually superior.

Il Dottore does not have the typical old man stance that Pantalone has, but does have a distinguishing walk. When in the middle of a droning monologue, Il Dottore will usually walk in a figure eight to suggest to the audience that he is getting nowhere in his thinking. He makes spreading gestures with his hands as if sowing the seed of his faulty logic. When standing still, Il Dottore will usually place all of his weight on the back of his heels to push forward his belly.

The mask of Il Dottore is rather unique. The nose of the mask is puched back to give him the impression of a pig. Some bushy eyebrows or moustache are optional. Il Dottore’s mask is unique in that it is one of the only Commedia mask to be a quarter mask (Covering the forehead and nose but nothing else). It is speculated that this is so because Il Dottore’s mouth must be constantly moving. This also lets the actor apply some rouge to give Il Dottore the flushed cheeks of a fat man.

Intellectual as he seems, Il Dottore impresses no one except Pantalone, who will frequently visit Il Dottore for various drugs and medicines, and possibly Il Capitano. Il Dottore usually will have a zanni servant and at times can be as cruel to his subordinates as Pantalone.
