As mentioned
before, Il Capitano has no real place in the Old man section in that he is not
necessarily old and certainly not much of a man. As his name suggests, he is a
military captain, usually from a foreign land. Il Capitano is similar to Il
Dottore in that they both boast of their superiority. Il Capitano, however, is
boastful of his courage and manliness. He never passes up an opportunity to brag
about his daring feats of battle, or the number of women he’s pleased at once.
In reality of course, Il Capitano is a coward and completely inexperienced in
bed. If Capitano is ever frightened onstage he will shoot up in the air
shrieking at the top of his lungs. His motivations are more to make people think
he’s brave a macho than actually being so.

Il Cpaitano constantly tries to keep up his manly façade. He will always
walk with his hands on his hips, with wide slow steps constantly grunting, as if
his boots are filled with cement and only his superior strength can move them.
As a captain, he always has a sword at his side, but he will never draw his
sword for any reason whatsoever. When describing his escapades his will
sometimes re-live his charges by shouting a war cry and running head first. When
he is scared, he runs the other direction with his feet way in front of his hips
as if something is biting at his heels.
Since Il capitano is an unmistakably humorous, he deserves a humiliating
mask. Hence a long, phallic nose suits him well.
Il captiano is also similar to Il Dottore in that he impresses no one
except for Pantalone and himself. A servant usually accompanies him, most of the
time Arlecchino. Every occasion, Il Capitano will get remarks for a lady trying
to make her other lover jealous. This does nothing but works Il Capitano into a
sweat. For all it’s worth, Il Capitano might as well be impotent as well as
the rest of the Old men.
