The masks of Commedia operate in a state between hope and fear. Each mask is afraid of some impending doom such as starvation, bankruptcy or the loss of love. Each mask also has a hope that keeps them going such as food, money or reciprocation. It is the tension that is created between these extremes which give the mask purpose and dramatic tension as it plays.
