Baseball

Be patient, be ready, be explosive.
Before the pitch...

Check the base runners.

Check your position. Don't hug the lines, unless the situation calls for it.

On the windup...

Lean in, balls of your feet, square to the plate.

On contact...

Take time to read the ball, rock back on the first step. (It's better to get burned in front of you than behind.)

Hustle to the ball - get there early.

Over your head, turn and sprint.

Runner on, take roller off your glove foot

Before catch...

Line yourself up for throw.

Flip glasses down at top of arc, or find ball through webbing.

Call it!

As you catch it, move through the ball.

To throw...

Line up your glove-side shoulder to the target.

Elbow up, fingers on top of the ball.

Make it a one-bounce throw and chase it in.

Special Situations
Ball at the fence...

Before game, count warning track strides.

Feel for fence with throwing arm.

Jump straight up - land on throwing leg.

Bunt shown...

Charge in hard, but ready to turn and sprint.

Ground ball, lead runner at second...

Move through ball, come up throwing.

Ground ball, lead runner at third...

Make a safety stop, throw to cut-off at second.

Fly ball, lead runner at third...

Catch ball on throwing side, one-hop it to the plate.

Not your play...

Balls hit to opposite field, runners stealing?. Base coverage is up to you, too!

Turn and Sprint... (also called the 3-Fly Drill)
Start with all outfielders near foul line. First fielder starts 50' out. Helper toss a pop up far enough beyond fielder to force him to turn and sprint. Ball is caught and dropped, then a second then third ball is lobbed - each one farther out, to either left or right.
Second cycle: ball is caught and thrown to cut-off man. (Fielder must find bearings and react quickly.)

B.P. Scoring... Put 2 or 3 outfielders on each side of second base during live batting practice. Add secondary batters to keep them busy. To score, count only the dropped balls.

Position Drills... (drills done in actually fielding position, also as part of Pre-Game Warm-Up)

One-hop home. Bounce it between the mound and plate.

Into the middle. To 2nd base from the lines or foul territory.

Goal Post Drill... (combines rollers, hoppers, long toss and relay)
Takes groups of 4 players in a row stretched foul line to foul line, or from from home base to outfield fence (as shown, for scale): fielder (A), goal post (B), pivot (C), fielder (D).
Starts when B simulates a hit (hopper or roller) to A who long tosses over B (arms up in goal post) to C for quick-turn relay to D.
D then lines the ball to C to start reverse sequence...
C 'hits' back to D for long toss over D (arms in goal post) to B for quick turn relay to A. Repeat.
