THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL

The Montreal protocol was an agreement to try and protect the earth's atmosphere. The treaty was first signed in 1990 and was changed in 1992. The agreement was to stop or decrease as much ozone depleting gasses and compounds from entering the atmosphere, gasses like chlorofluorcarbons (CFC's), halons, carbon tetrachloride and methyl chloroform are to be stopped by the year 2000, and 2005 for methyl chloroform. Evidence from scientists has shown that theses gasses were a serious threat to the earths ozone layer, they deplete it by destoying ozone molecules which means that the earth comes under more stress from UV rays from the sun, which causes skin cancer and various other diseases to humans.

The "Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer" was the framework under which the Montreal protocol was decided upon.
