1968 Olympics

At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, two African-American track stars created controversy when they saluted Black Power. Tommie Smith and John Carlos, winners of the gold and bronze medals, respectively, raised their black-gloved fists after receiving their medals for the 200 meter race. Their fists remained raised while the "Star Spangled Banner" was played.
