| In December of 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway. At thirty five, he was
the youngest man to receive the accolade at the time.
The Nobel Peace Prize is named in honor of the scientist Alfred
Bernhard Nobel (1833-1896). Nobel willed his money to the formation
of a program that would award a prize each year to an outstanding
person in each of the following six categories: chemistry,
economics, international peace, literature, physiology/medicine,
and physics.
