| During the 1900's, many African-American musicians
became prominent figures in the field of entertainment. Names such
as Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong (1901-1971), Joe "King" Oliver, Duke
Ellington (1899-1974), Charlie Parker (1920-1955), Dizzy Gillespie
(1917-1993), Miles Davis (1926-1991), John Coltrane (1926-1967),
and Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982) became well known, and jazz
became a popular form of music. In fact, the 1920's also became
known as Jazz Age.
