James Meredith, an African American, decided to
try to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962. This
university in Oxford, Mississippi, did not accept any black
students at the time. But after suing the school and arguing his
case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, Meredith became a student
and graduated the following year. Prior to his enrollment, however,
a riot took place and President John F. Kennedy had to send in
troops.
