Dear Journal,
A new era has begun. It is the one of the flaming arrow. The publication of
The Complete Compendium of Military Classics has opened my eyes along with many others about the future of warfare, which will be influenced strongly by the explosive fire arrows.
Tseng King-Liang's work contains information about the ingredients, which are sulfur, saltpeter, charcoal, pitch, and dried varnish. Together, they make blackpowder. The publication of this knowledge might be dangerous if it reaches the hand of our enemy the Mongols, who have been victim to these new devices. Tseng King-Liang describes in 994 AD how a hundred thousand men laying siege to the city of Tzu' Tung were routed buy the fire arrows. We must guard this destructive power with the utmost priority.
