With these and other comments, Newton demonstrated
that the white light of the sun is a mixture of light with the visible
colors. Each color suffers a different shunting line for the prism.
Technical, we say that the violet light is more refringente that
the red, therefore more is turned aside. Or, in other terms, the
refractive index of the violet component is greater that the refractive
index of the red component.
During all its life Newton believed that the light was done of particles
emitted for the luminous bodies. Different colors would correspond
different particles. In air, all the particles would have the same
speed but, entering in the glass prism, the speed would be different
for each color. This would cause the different shunting line of
the components of the light. Other scientists, as Christian Huyghens
(" róiguens " is pronounced) said that the light was formed of waves,
each color having a different wave length. Today we know that Huyghens
had more ratio. But, to be right with Newton, we remember that it
said that " did not make hypotheses " on the nature of the light,
only observed its behavior.
EXPERIENCE
This is a classic experience to show that the white is the addition
of the visible colors. It uses a disk LP of the old ones (that its
father does not want more) as bed and glue on it one rodela with
sectors painted with the colors of the solar specter. It makes this
disk to turn, under one strong white light. A skill to make this
is fixing the disk in the tip of a manual wimble. Well-taken care
of extreme Tome to prevent that the disk if frees or if breaks in
high speed, causing a serious accident. If the ratio of colors will
be correct, the girante disk is white. In the majority of the times,
it is only gray. She will be necessary to try some sets of sectors
colored until finding a combination that gives an acceptable white.
