The Concept of Ubuntu

Africa consists of many countries which in turn comprise of many ethnic groups who each have their own cultures.  African people have a strong sense of social responsibility.  The emphasis is put on the group rather than on the individual.

So, what is ubuntu?  Ubuntu is an expression which has its origin in the concept of umantu -- human being.  According to the Bantu philosophy, the human being is divided into two beings:

  1. the outside, which exists from the presence of the inside being
  2. the inside, which gives life and shape to the outside

The inside is also understood to be the heart -- the center of human personality, feelings, thoughts and human will.  This is the center of human values.

The concept of ubuntu can also be understood as the essence of God's presence and manifestation among human beings, therefore, it is considered as a universal value.  Africans believe that anyone who has ubuntu understands the values of human life.  They would rather use their abilities for the good of the common cause.  Ubuntu teaches them to love oneself, love others and their belongings, and helping the community achieve what it has set out to achieve.  The content of ubuntu sounds out the love and compassion of God.

How do you feel about the concept of ubuntu (whether you live in or out of Africa)?
