Clawing & Scratching

A cat may claw and scratch at object for any of the following reasons.

To create a very visible sign of his presence.
The marks may attract other cats to investigate the scents that have been deposited by special glands on the cat's feet.
To keep his claws in good condition.
As an active way of signalling his dominance over subordinate spectators.
As an indication of excitement during interactions with people.
