Politics in Pietermaritzburg , like in any city in South Africa , caused conflict between people of many Townships. People died and many were left stranded without homes.

The main reason for the killing of many people in Pietermaritzburg was because of two parties that were trying to take over Pietermaritzburg townships. The two Parties were the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

During their feuding they destroyed each other in any possible way, they assassinated leaders of the opposite part they, ruled the community they lived in i.e. there were no go areas for some people. This meant that if you were known to be living in the branch that was known as ANC's you were not supposed to be found in the IFP's branch or you were dealt with badly.

HIGHLIGHT IN IMBALI

Many residents blame the destruction of Fedsem on the conflict between ANC and IFP. Fedsem ended up being destroyed by the Imbali residents. Many people died during this time and when the fighting stopped a peace Monument was put up in Stage 2 . During all this fighting Imbali Post office was destroyed, The Imbali Brewery and many other buildings that would look beautiful if they were here today.

THERE IS A PEACE MONUMENT THAT WAS PUT IN IMBALI STAGE 2 IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED DURING THE VIOLENCE.

HIGHLIGHT IN EDENDALE

The "Seven Day War" which lasted for 7 day. This also resulted in the fueding of the two parties.

IFP had a rally in Durban and on their way back they stopped first in Imbali. There everybody that got off the bus was assassinated, they did this in every bus stop. They even went to Edendale Hospital and you couldn't get in because you were risking your life. It didn't end there. People's houses were burnt and more lives were taken.
