Production | Team Members | Coaches | Contact > Production The Beginning The team started off with Jie and Iris, who were classmates in school and who both agreed, after failing to win a previous internet contest, to enter Thinkquest Internet Challenge 2001. The originally conceived idea was more complex and general. Iris wanted to incorporate all eras after the Renaissance into a collective site outlining how different aspects of culture affected each other. But, when Jie and Iris got to the library, they realized they could not carry so many books, and thus the idea was narrowed down to Romanticism. After a harrowing ride home on the bus with dozens of books in each arm (because Iris forgot to bring bags), Iris and Jie got home, and an outline was made and articles were assigned. Each team member was given an article more appropriate to their situation and knowledge. For example, because Davide lives in Italy, he researched Romantic Opera and Italian Literature. When the articles were finished, they were sent to Davide or Jie to translate, and to Iris to put up onto the webpage you see now. The Adventure On the path to success, Iris, Jie, and Davide encountered many challenges. Getting everything done on time worried everyone, but this was solved by many a sleepless night (Iris almost got a heart-attack from drinking so much tea and coffee, and Davide slept in the day and worked at night). Davide pointed out that there were too many articles, especially biographies, and he didn't think he'd finish translating in time. Also, Davide didn't like ICQ and Iris didn't like mIRC and Jie wouldn't download mIRC, so communication between the three was done through e-mail until Davide downloaded AIM in August :). But communication wasn't the only problem. Davide went away to Florida for a month, very rarely contacting Iris or Jie through e-mail, and then away periodically for a few days in August, without any connection to the internet. Iris couldn't figure out the new-fangled technology, Flash 5, until her cousin who was majoring in graphics design came to visit and gave her some tips. She also tried educating herself with software books from Fry's. Jie was away taking college classes until July, which didn't allow her to write very many articles until August. The Website-- Why Exactly is it Here? What am I supposed to Learn? Because literature is more conceptual than factual, learning is more personal and specific to each individual user. Learning is not hindered by facts, dates, and names. Romanticism in an individualist school of thought, as users will soon learn, and how they should interpret each Romantic idea and vision is entirely up to them. Users will also learn why and how Romanticism made such an impact on history and the world, and how Romanticism is expressed through different mediums, such as music, written word, or visual images. Users are allowed to criticize and voice their own opinions about the movement through the salon. Users are also allowed to interpret their visions and ideas of Romanticism in the Romantic Press, an online magazine that allows for users to submit their own, original work. Iris
