ROBOTS AND THE OUTSIDE WORLD

One of the major future uses of robots will lie in the residential and commercial fields. Even at this present time, great strides are being taken with the advancement of robots for home and commercial use. These robots will be able to take the strain off of their owners by doing simple tasks such as patrolling or delivering items.

A good example of a current robot that does such tasks is HelpMate, a robot designed by Transit Research. Its task is to help nurses by doing tasks such as getting an item from the storeroom or getting a late meal from the kitchen. For an automaton to be able to do such things, it takes a large load off of the nurses, which allows them to take care of more patients. It travels on its own through the hospital with a map programmed into its memory and can even use the elevators of the hospital, which it summons with an infrared beam. It was first used in the Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, and similar projects are being tested in other hospitals.

Another thing that robots can excel at is repeating tasks. A robot that demonstrates this is Sentry, a $50 000 security robot designed by Denning Mobile Robotics. This 485 pound robot patrols a preset route and scans for intruders through an infrared beam or a microwave ray. It can send video pictures and notify a guard who is at his post. This robot is smart enough to find another way around if its path is blocked but not more than 20 to 30 feet from its preset path. It was put to the test, when a few criminals were breaking in through the roof of Boston's Bayside Exposition Centre. The robot swiftly detected the intruders and sent a radio signal to a guard along with video pictures. The guard then came out and chased away the intruders. This robot's main advantage over a human security officer is that it does not get tired, therefore can detect criminal always with peak efficiency. It also contains better detection devices than a human would.

Another robot that works under the same principal is the Lawn Ranger, created by Technical Solutions. This robot almost mows lawns on its own. All the owner of this robot has to do is mow the outside edge of their lawn and around their tree. The Lawn Ranger will do the rest and cut the lawn in a nifty circular pattern until it reaches the middle of the lawn. The reason why a person would have to trim the outside edge of their lawn and cut around their tree is because a sensor checks how short or tall the grass is and avoids cutting it, if needed. Although this machine is a time saver, it does come with a hefty price tag of $1000 to $1500 US and therefore is only recommended for large lawns.
