ROBOTS IN FILM
Since the 1920's robot has been portrayed in films. Unfortunately during the first half of
the twentieth century, they were usually portrayed as the villain, with no emotion in movies
such as "Metropolis" where a mad scientist seeks to replace humans with machines that
eventually turn on him and "Westworld" where robot gunslingers at an amusement park attack
humans. Only in the latter half of the twentieth century were robot more often being portrayed
as "good guys." Example of robot "good guys" are Robbie the Robot (Forbidden Planet - 1956),
Gort (The Day the Earth Stood Still - 1951) and Andrew (Bi-Centennial Man - 1999). Some of the
movies such as Bi-Centennial Man and Forbidden Planet, apply the "Three Laws of Robotics"
created by Isaac Asimov. Yet others completely ignore them. Robots in media unfortunately
tend to shift our perception of robots away from reality. In the current times, we are not
even near achieving robots at the level of Andrew or T-800.
