more about the topic;

Background information

In Sudan, students are one of the groups that face the greatest risk of arbitrary arrest, ill-treatment and/or torture during detention. There have been a worrying number of arbitrary arrests and restrictions on the freedoms of expression and association throughout the past year, with the harshest actions taken in May 2002, and October/November 2002. Both crackdowns followed demonstrations commemorating significant historical events. In May, twenty-five students and members of the ANF were arrested and charged with offences including "war against the state", sedition, breaching public peace, and causing injury. Members of the SSDF and members of the ANF have been specifically targeted by these repressive actions. In January 2002, Acts of Student Codes of Conduct were introduced to prevent students from taking part in political activities. These Acts have provided grounds for student suspension and dismissal. Meetings, demonstrations and other student political or social activities are broken up by security forces, and the Khartoum University Students Union (KUSU), a major student union, was suspended and banned four years ago when persons linked with the political opposition appeared poised to win campus elections.

I happen to stumble in here while researching and just wanted to make a quick reply on this last comment. You said

Freedom of expression is abused so often it's not even funny. i hate rights. i LOATHE them. There should just be laws, without the abstract concept of a "right" attached to it.

The problem I see in the solution you suggest is that you are overlooking the fact that laws are very abused in all cultures. Without some fundamental human rights (what is acceptable - greater good) what would your defense be for injustices in the law? No law has been made that isn't broken everyday.

Hey, this's Sheena here.
I think a relevant topic which we can all relate to is the terrorist attacks yesterday on the US.  The US most likely would like to retaliate...but how?  If they choose to bomb the country of the guilty - how fair and right is it to the innocent people of the country who had nothing to do with the original attacks?
Just trying to make conversation.

Hi Emily!  Thanks for signing up!  The quiz was a pre-made cgi script- in that we didn't actually write it, but we put in the questions and made it work (which was a beast).  I totally agree with you on the problems with the quiz though-it definitely doesn't totally reflect a person's stance on that particular issue.  Especially since we're not like emode.com, in that we don't have psychologists working for us to crank out quizzes.  How it works is that each answer is given a particular point value, and when submitted, all the points get added up.  And if your points fall in a certain range, then you're told that you're whatever.

If we had more time, we probably would/should/could have put in more questions.  But for what it's worth, I think it's good enough to stimulate thinking on the part of the user, which is what we were after in the first place.

Nice to hear from you!
