Appeal for Water Hyacinth Samples.

You and your school can become a part of a research programme.

Dr Alex Reid is busy with research into developing a more efficient biocontrol programme for water hyacinth. He is needing samples of water hyacinth plants for analysis and so is appealing to people all over the world to send him 3 or 4 healthy leaves for DNA extraction.

How to preserve samples.

Cut off 3 or 4 healthy leaves. Blot them dry.

Place them in a sealable plastic bag with 5g of a desiccant like sillica jel. The silica jel will remove the water from the leaves, but will leave the DNA intact for several weeks.

You need to add as much information as possible about the place where the sample was collected from. If you have access to GPS please use it so that you can give an exact location of the samples.
