You and your school can become a
part of a research programme.
Dr Alex Reid is busy with
research into developing a more efficient biocontrol programme for water
hyacinth. He is needing samples of water hyacinth plants for analysis
and so is appealing to people all over the world to send him 3 or 4
healthy leaves for DNA extraction.
|
| How to preserve samples. |
 |
Cut off 3 or 4 healthy
leaves. Blot them dry.
|
 |
Place them in a sealable
plastic bag with 5g of a desiccant like sillica jel. The silica jel
will remove the water from the leaves, but will leave the DNA intact
for several weeks. |
You need to add as much
information as possible about the place where the sample was collected
from. If you have access to GPS please use it so that you can give an
exact location of the samples.
Dr Reid will acknowledge all
samples sent. |
