Nightlife
Cape Town’s nightlife is as diverse as
its culture. Feel the real pulse of the city at the
nightclubs, jam-packed with many people of different races and
cultures. A choice of entertainment includes a night at the
ballet, theatre, opera or even a rock concert.

There are many clubs to choose from, but
don’t be confused, there’ll be one for your
mindset. Club More in Loop Street plays mostly
house music and some drum-and-bass; Cape Town’s
local drum-and-bass group, Sublime, play at the piano
lounge. Gignet theatre café, the new music venue,
is up market and cosy. The jam in de Villiers
Street hosts regular hip-hop events. Try Getafix,
off Long Street, if it’s a trance you’re after.
Long Street has a range of clubs and bars, from model
hang outs to more relaxed spots.

Claremont main road has a host of social spots,
good for a drink or to catch a live band. Try the
Green Man next to Cavendish Square and some of the other
places upstairs.

Observatory also has many cafés and restaurants
with a predominantly bohemian feel. Rolling Stones
has its regulars who come for a game and/or to socialise.

Long Street is the main artery of Cape Town’s
entertainment scene, containing more than 50 restaurants,
bars and nightclubs.

The newly opened Canal Walk also provides a
variety of entertainment options from live music through
to cinemas and restaurants. Whether you are still
living in the 70’s or at the cutting the edge of
club culture, dockside provides you with all the
entertainment from live music to big band performances.

With the exception
of horse racing, gambling in south Africa used to be confined to
casinos located in ‘homelands’ or ‘independent
states’ established in the late 1970’s by the previous
nationalist government. With the dissolution of the
homelands, there were no more borders to cross and in effect,
these casinos found themselves ‘inside’ South Africa.
The first casino
licenses were issued for Caledon casino, hotel and spa, which
opened in October 2000 and Sun International’s GrandWest
casino in Cape Town, which opened in December 2000.
GrandWest is the
biggest project in South Africa after Sun City and features 1750
slot machines and 66 tables, 1000 cinema seats and a film studio
with a movieworld theme park, an ice rink and 15 shops. Two
hotels, a village market and a short rail link to the V&A
Waterfront are also on the cards. In true, Sun
International style, there are even supervised activities to keep
the children entertained while adults go and try their luck at
the casino.
