This section explains what the human genome is all about - beginning from the cell, the basic unit of human existence. The cell is something that most of us have no problems understanding. From the cell, we progress to other parts such as chromosomes, DNA, genes and finally to the genome. A Flash illustration of these concepts is also included in our website to aid in the understanding of these concepts

Next, the basic concepts of genetics are explained, with a historical overview beginning with Gregor Mendel's experiments with peas. By now, the viewer should have no problem appreciating the fact that genes determine heredity. After that, simple inheritance concepts are explained. The concepts of simple inheritance are illustrated further with a common inheritance disease among Singaporeans, Thalassemia.
