SOCIAL

The revolution and research in genetics and biomedicine has also raised a lot of social issues and implications. For example if the successful cloning of humans were to be allowed, it would raise issues on housing and the family. In the process of cloning, an unfertilised egg from the adult female is removed. This results in a clone which is an identical copy of the mother. The resulting clone would have no father, just like Dolly the sheep. The process of cloning certainly goes against the order of nature in which a human is produced from the fusion of the male sperm and a female egg

This raises an interesting issue. Would the male species be redundant in society? Would we end up with a family with no fathers and sons since technically a male is not required for procreation. The family is the basic building block of society in any country and especailly so in Singapore

A family helps make life balanced, fun and fulfilling. Families also serve as an important pillar of stability and support for the individual as well as for the nation. At the individual level, families are a primary source of emotional, social and financial support. On the national level, strong and stable families are fundamental to social stability and national cohesiveness as they help develop socially responsible individuals and deepen the bond Singaporeans have in their country. How would the absence of the male affect the family?

With the prospect of immortality - this also raises the issue of land, food and housing. If humans can live forever, these issues would be a serious concern for any government and society.
