BACKGROUND

We are living in interesting times. Daily we are faced with new challenges and the ever-increasing pace of scientific and technological development. Perhaps one of the most exciting developments is the draft release of the full sequencing of the Human Genome announced in late 2000 and the benefits it promises for humankind.

Greater understanding of how our bodies function, how our genes contribute to the diseases we suffer and how we age, should lead to major advances in the way in which we deal with disease and may affect our attitudes to ageing, reproduction and how we live our lives. Isn't science and technology wonderful?

To the layman or students who have not studied biology however, the human genome is probably something they cannot appreciate. We attempt to fill in this gap and make it easy for anyone who has no knowledge whatsoever about the human genome to understand the human genome and its significance as well as related concepts including historical events and important discoveries.

Next, we look at recent exciting developments and milestones in human genome research around the world and the various issues such as social, ethical and legal issues that arise as a result of these developments.

Last, but not least, we have included various interactive features in our website to enhance this learning experience for the surfer. Welcome aboard surfer!
