Flowers and leaves should be depicted in various positions on a
plant ¡V left and right; high and low; facing upwards and downwards,
front and back.
To paint a flower with ink in the xieyi way, load your brush with
both dark and light ink. When you bring the brush down on paper,
the tip, with the thick ink, should be at the centre of the flower.
Keeping the tip at the centre, rotate the brush as you lower it
and you will sketch out the overlapping petals, of which the ones
along the perimeter will be lighter and less distinct than those
nearer the centre, however forcefully you bring down the brush.
Reload the brush when the ink has been used up. Put in the stamens
when the ink has half dried, with a flicking stroke using the brush
tip.
