Abstract Expressionism first appeared in America in 1920's. It is a form of art in which the artist expresses himself purely through the use of form and color.
As the name itself, it is form of non-representational, or non-objective art, which means that there are no concrete or real objects represented. It is considered to be the first American artistic movement.
Abstract was originally used to describe the work of American painters: Mark Tobey, Arshile Gorky and Jackson Pollock, etc.
The movement can be broadly divided into two groups: Action Painting, led by Pollock, de Kooning and Franz Kline. They emphasized on the physical action in paintings; Color Field Painting, typified by Mark Rothko and Kenneth Noland, they were initially concerned with exploring the effect of pure color on a canvas.
