The Sun

Sun Collisions

and all its glory

The sun has extremely immense proportions.  It contains more than 99.8% of the total mass of the solar system.  It is about 333,000 times bigger than the earth, making our world look like a miniscule speck compared to its colossal size.  Unequaled in size and energy release by any other satellite in our solar system, the sun harbors information that modern scientists are struggling to uncover.

As intriguing as the sun is, it has also been a point of frustration.  Solar flares directed at earth can travel thousands of miles, knocking out satellite signals and causing radio and television interference.  As a result, scientists are now more curious as to the cause of solar flares and the influence they can have on earth.

Previously unexplored, solar flares have recently become an intense subject to study.  Interest has increased because solar flares occur in 11-year cycles.  Right now, we are at a peak of the solar flare season, and there is a rage to collect as much data as possible before the.  They release 5,000,000 tons of energy a second in the form of gamma rays, the equivalent of a billion megatons of TNT.
