Prevention
means a group of measures to avoid the appearance of a disease.
There are 3 levels of prevention: primary, secondary and
third, being from which only the first corresponds to this
concept. Secondary prevention is used to designate the treatment
itself, while third prevention means rehabilitation. Unfortunately,
due to the great amout of alcoholic beverages, without a
legal jurisdiction and adequate control, as well as the
growing availability of other drugs and psychotropic medicaments,
the most common strategies of primary prevention have no
or little possibility of success, with poor results in terms
of cost/ benefit in most part of the cases. This issue of
primary prevention is complicated by the social and cultural
concept of the use of alcohol and other substances. Throughout
the years, the evolution of the concept of alcoholism and
drugs has been observed.
