Endurance may be defined as the ability to take part in vigorous physical activity over an extended period of time. For our purposes, strength may be defined as the force with which
the muscles contract. Building strength and muscular endurance are related, as will become clearer later on in this chapter.
Volleyball specifically demands repeated short bursts of intensive activity interspersed with longer periods of low to moderate activity. The periods of low or moderate activity provide the player with the time
needed to recover from the frequent periods of intensive involvement.
Two kinds of endurance must be achieved for total fitness The first is cardiovascular endurance, which involves the circulatory and respiratory systems and their function in sustaining total physical activity
over long periods of time. The second is muscular endurance, which may be defined as the ability of specific muscle groups to perform their functions repeatedly over extended periods of time. The methods used
to build muscular endurance are also employed in building muscular strength. Many of the principles of conditioning are common to both.
By looking at the specific nature of the two kinds of endurance, we will be able to understand better the rationale for training that must go into preparing players for the physical demands of volleyball.
