Variations of Volleyball

More than Six on a side

Six on a side is the regulation for competitive volleyball in the scholastic, collegiate, national, and international games for both men and women. Given the 30 foot by 30 foot size of half the court, six on a side provides the right balance of space to be covered by the players. Once there are more than six on a side, the space per player is reduced and each player has less to do. Games played by more than six on a side tend to be more recreational than competitive and are generally played more for their social aspects than for the values ascribed to competitive six-on-a-side volleyball.

There is nothing wrong with playing volleyball with up to ten players on a side as long as it is understood that these games should be played for fun. Ten or even twelve players per side has its place socially and even in physical education classes where space may be at a premium. More than six on a side is not helpful when practicing or training for competition. The crowded court does not lend itself to improving individual or team tactics. On the other hand, games played with fewer than six players will certainly improve skills and techniques, and will go a long way toward developing physical condition.
