Historical Timeline
Volleyball was originated in 1895 by William g. Morgan, a physical director at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The game was originally designed for a large class of
businessmen who desired an activity that was not as strenuous as basketball. It was first played by raising a tennis net to a six foot height, and using the inside
bladder of a basketball as a volleyball. Combining the skills and rules of tennis, handball, and baseball, the game was played by any number of players in nine
innings with three "outs" per team. This game was called "mintonette". In 1896, the game was introduced nationally at a YMCA Sports Conference. At this
conference, Dr. Alfred T. Halstead convinced Mr. Morgan to change the name of the game to "volleyball". The Spalding Company developed the first
official volleyball. The first official rules were written in 1897, utilizing the Spalding ball and a net height of se ven feet.
