Your Coaching Tasks

What is your job as a coach? You may see your job in different ways, depending on your situation and your approach to coaching. As Shakespeare wrote:

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts…

As a coach you may be asked to "play many parts". You must be capable of filling all these roles:

Instructor

directing activity

Teacher

imparting new knowledge and ideas

Motivator

producing a positive, decisive approach

Disciplinarian

setting rewards and punishments

Manager

leading and directing your performers

Administrator

dealing efficiently with the paperwork

Publicity

agent in touch with the media and the public

Social worker

counselling, advising, supporting

Friend

giving time to build a real relationship

Scientist

analysing, evaluating and drawing conclusions

Student

listening, learning, thinking for yourself

What makes you good at your job?
Know yourself
Know your performers
Know your sport
Skilful communication
