How People Learn Skills

Careful study and experiment have produced certain principles of learning that provide a reasonable set of guidelines for coaches as they choose their teaching methods and techniques, and as they plan situations within which their performers can learn by experience. They include the following areas, developed in more detail below:

Skills and techniques
Motivation and rewards
Recognizing individual differences
Memory, learning and performance changes

Although these principles have an academic basis, they correspond with common sense. You should apply your own common sense to every learning situation. As your experience grows, you will become more skilled at selecting the best method for each situation.
