Geography
Geographic Position
The Republic of Croatia, with a population of 4.8
million, is located in south-central Europe, bordering
Slovenia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
and the Italy on the Adriatic Sea. Croatia is located
between Western Europe and Aegean Sea and Turkish
Straits, so that it controls most travel routes
between those regions. Even though most people consider
Croatia to be a Balkan country, that is not so.
Croatia belongs to Central Europe, and Croatian
government is doing it's best to prove that
to the rest of the world.
Relief
The relief of Croatia varies from warm sea bottoms,
huge valleys and small hills to icy-cold mountain
tops.
As the map shows, eastern part of
Croatia is mostly covered with plains, which are
a part of Panonian Plain. Northwest region of Croatia
is mostly hills and river valleys, while central
Croatia is the highest part of Croatia with mountains
Velebit (1757m) and Dinara (1830m). The part of
Croatia by the Adriatic coast and islands is the
largest region of Croatia, and if tourism continues
to grow rapidly, it may become the most important
one.
Three important rivers go through
Croatia. The most important one is Danube. It's
important because it connects Germany and Eastern
Europe. Drava is very important for Croatian power
supply. The number of power plants is increasing
each year. Sava is also very important to Croats.
