Tang Xuanzong is also known as Tang Minghuang. He was a man of competence. At the beginning of his rule, his abilities in poetry, arts and martial arts were one of the best in the country. Because of his political talents and quick reaction, he was able to prevent princess Taiping from upsurping the throne. During Xuanzong's early rein, the society was stable and the nation strong. Later, however, he fell in love with the wife of his son, whom he forced to become one of his concubines. This concubine was the famous Yang Guifei, later to be named as one of the 4 most beautiful women in Chinese history. Xuangzong from this time spent all his time in search of pleasure and neglected the court as well as politics. Tang thus walked on its road to destruction.
During the Treason of Ansi, Xuanzong escaped to Chengdu. But the army wouldn't advance in the middle because Yang Guifei's brother had connections with the traitors. Because of the hatred the soldiers had towards Yang Guifei, even after the death of her brother, they still wouldn't advance. Xuanzong had no choice but to watch his favourite woman kill herself at the slopes of Mawei village. Yang Guifei thus became the scapegoat of Xuangzong's crimes. After Xuanzong escaped to Shu, his son succeded the throne and he became Taishanghuang. In his later life, becuase of his love for dance, he taught dances.
