TranslationThe Former Lord sent a person to meet Ma Chao, Ma Chao's troops reached the walls of the city. Those within the city gates were in uproar, Liu Zhang kowtowed and submitted; and Ma Chao was made 'General Pacifying the West', commander of Linju, and Marquis of Qiandu. The Former Lord became King of Hanzhong, and made Ma Chao 'General of the Left'. In the year of Zhangwu, [he] was transferred to the title of 'General of Chariots and Cavalry', and received the role of Governor of Liangzhou, … the records state ["…"] In the second year, he died; at the time he was 47 years of age. Before decease [he] produced a memorial, saying: "This subject has 200 mouths within his gates, with cousin Ma Dai, in a limitless crusade against Mengde [Cao Cao], and deeply entrust it to your majesty; [this subject] has no more to say." Ma Chao was made the Wei Marquis; his son Ma Cheng succeeded. Ma Dai took the title of 'General Pacifying the North', and further decorated with the designation Marquis of Chencang. Ma Chao's daughter was wedded to the King of Anping. Huang Zhong styled Hansheng, was a native of Nanyang. Liu Biao, Governor of Jingzhou made him a general of the gentleman-of-the-household; [Huang] accompanied Liu Biao's nephew in garrisoning the city of Changsha. Duke Cao conquered Jingzhou, and [Huang Zhong] was made major-general and fulfilled his old role; was under Han Xuan, Grand Administrator of Changsha. The Former Lord secured the various commanderies of the south, Huang Zhong fulfilled an entrusted position, and accompanied [him] into Shu. At Jiameng, he received assignment, and turned to besiege Liu Zhang; Huang Zhong frequently charged into formations himself, and firmly and bravely led three armies. After Yizhou was secured, he was made 'Prisoner-suppressing General'. In the 24th year of Jian'an, he attacked Xiahou Yuan at Dingjun Mountain, Hanzhong. Xiahou Yuan's troops had an elite foundation … Huang Zhong led the officers and soldiers, the gongs and drums roused the sky, and the voices of triumph moved the gorge; in one battle Xiahou Yuan was killed; Xiahou Yuan's troops were greatly defeated. [Huang Zhong] was transferred to 'General Campaigning in the West'. The next year, the Former Lord became King of Hanzhong, and made Huang Zhong 'General of the Rear'; Zhuge Liang advised the Former Lord, saying: "Huang Zhong's name is prestigious, he is usually an inferior match to Guan, Ma; but today has show himself to be equal. Ma, Zhang were close, and saw [his] deeds themselves; Guan hears of this from afar, and I fear he will not be happy; this cannot be had!" The Former Lord said: "I will solve this myself." Guan Yu and the rest, were all given Guanne Marquisdoms. The next year [Huang Zhong] died, and was made Gang Marquis. His son Huang Xu died early, and left no descendents. Zhao Yun styled Zilong, was a native of Zhending, Changshan. He originally belonged to Gongsun Zan; Gongsun Zan sent the Former Lord with Tian Ti to oppose Yuan Shao, and Zhao Yun followed as the premier horseman of the Former Lord. At the time the Former Lord was pursued by Duke Cao at Changban, Dangyang, his wives proceeded south, Zhao Yun cradled the weak son; that is the Latter Lord; and protected Madame Gan; that is the mother of the Latter Lord; averting danger. [He] was transferred to the role of 'Yamen General'. When the Former Lord entered Shu, Zhao Yun remained in Jingzhou. At Jiameng, the Former Lord turned and attacked Liu Zhang, calling for Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang led Zhao Yun, Zhang Fei and the rest upstream, securing the various prefectures. At Jiangzhou, [he] sent Zhao Yun to Jiangyang via the Wai River, to rendevous at Chengdu; and made Zhao Yun 'Supporting General'. In the year of Jianxing, [Zhao Yun] became the Centre Protector of the Army, 'South-campaigning General', and was bestowed Marquis of Yongchang, and later transferred to 'East-pacifying General'. In the fifth year, Zhuge Liang moved to Hanzhong. The next year, Zhuge Liang went on campaign, made noise at the way of Xie Gorge, Cao Zhen led his large host to oppose. Zhuge Liang ordered Zhao Yun and Deng Zhi to counter, whilst he himself went to besiege Qishan. Zhao Yun and Deng Zhi's troops were weak and the enemy's strong, and lost at Ji Gorge, but the ranks defended, and averted a great defeat. The army retreated, [Zhao Yun] was made 'General Defending the Army'. In the seventh year, [Zhao Yun] died, and was made Shunping Marquis. Earlier, during the time of the Former Lord, Fa Zheng received yi [title received by illustrious personages after their death]. In the time of the Latter Lord, Zhuge Liang achieved great honours and virtues, and along with Jiang Wan and Fei Wei were given yi; Xiahou Ba came to the nation from afar and after death received yi; subsequently Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao, Pang Tong, Huang Zhong and Zhao Huang were all bestowed yi, so that time could comment on their glories. Zhao Yun's son Zhao Tong succeeded, and was Huben zhonglang, commanding and supervising the army. [His] second son Zhao Guang, 'Yamen General', accompanied Jiang Wei at Tazhong and died in battle ...
