Duke Cao defeated Zhang Lu, and left Xiahou Yuan, Zhang He to garrison the Han valley. Zhang He commanded various troops down Baxi and the others were left at Hanzhong; Zhang He moved near Dangqu, Mengtou, Dangshi, and was only fifty days distant from Zhang Fei. Zhang Fei directed more than 10,000 elite soldiers, and intercepted Zhang He from his own path; in the narrow mountain path, without [chance of] aid from either side; Zhang Fei succeeded in defeating Zhang He. Zhang He abandoned Mayuan Mountain, and retreated with [little] more than ten men under his cape through Jian Way, leading the troops back to Nanzheng; the land of Ba achieved peace. The Former Lord became King of Hanzhong, and made Zhang Fei General of the Right. In the year of Zhangwu, [he] was transferred to [the title] of General of Chariots and Cavalry, becoming Colonel Director of Retainers, and further receiving the title of Marquis of Xixiang, the records state: " […]"

Preceding, Zhang Fei was brave and fierce, [but] inferior to Guan Yu; the Wei advisor Cheng Yu and others praised Guan Yu and Zhang Fei as enemies of ten thousand men. Guan Yu loved to command the rank-and-file to serve men of noble character; Zhang Fei loved to respect a gentleman but had no sympathy for low-lifes. The Former Lord frequently exhorted: " qing: [you] kill in excess, every second day sees your whip in action; this is the way to disaster." Zhang Fei did not repent. When the Former Lord went on expedition against Wu, Zhang Fei led 10,000 soldiers, at Langzhong to meet at Jiangzhou. Before leaving, the minor generals under his tent Zhang Da, Fan Qiang killed him, and took his head, went downstream to Sun Quan. The Chief Controller of Zhang Fei's camp sent a memorial to the Former Lord; when the Former Lord heard of the memorial from the Chief Controller, he said: "Alas! Zhang Fei is dead." Zhang Fei was made 'Huan Marquis'. His first son Zhang Bao, died early. His second son Shao succeeded, and was daizhong. Zhang Zun, son of Zhang Bao was Master of Writings, and accompanied Zhuge Zhan at Mianzhu, battled Deng Ai and was killed.

Ma Chao styled Mengqi, was a native of Maoling, Youfufeng. His father Ma Teng, in the latter reign years of Emperor Ling, was in charge of affairs with Bian Zhang and Han Sui in the western provinces. In the third year of Chuping, Han Sui and Ma Teng led their host on order of decree to Chang'an. The Han court made Han Sui 'General Guarding the West', and [he] returned to Jincheng; Ma Teng was made General Campaigning in the West, and garrisoned Mei. Later Ma Teng moved against Chang'an, was defeated, and retreated to Liangzhou. The Colonel Director of Retainers … Ma Teng sent Ma Chao with Zhong … to suppress Guo Yuan, Gao Gan at Pingyang; Ma Chao's general Pang De took the head of Guo Yuan himself. Later Ma Teng was unhappy with Han Sui and asked to return to the capital province. Subsequently [he] became Commandant of the Guards and made Ma Chao lieutenant-general, holding the title 'Du Marquis', commanding Ma Teng's forces.

Ma Chao commanded the host, and united with Han Sui, as well as Yang Qui, Liu Kan, and Cheng Yi, against Tong Pass. Duke Cao spoke with Han Sui and Ma Chao alone; Ma Chao had great strength and few losses, and was about to take Duke Cao captive, [but] Duke Cao's general Xu Zhu looked on furiously, and Ma Chao dared not make a move. Duke Cao used Jia Xu's advice, and sowed distrust amongst Ma Chao and Han Sui; [they] guessed and suspected each other's actions; the [Xiliang] army was greatly defeated. Ma Chao fled to protect the various Rong peoples, Duke Cao pursued as far as Anding, [but due to unrest] in the north, led his army back east. Yang Fu advised Duke Cao saying: "Ma Chao has Lü Bu's bravery, poccesses the heart of a Qiang or a Hu. If [our] great army withdraws and does not make steadfast preparations, the various commanderies of Longshang will no longer be in the possession of the nation" Ma Chao led the Rong against the commanderies of Longshang as predicted, the commanderies and prefectures of Longshang submitted, Wei Kang, Inspector of Liangzhou was killed, [Ma Chao] occupied Yicheng, and gained more followers. Ma Chao called himself 'General Campaigning in the West', Governor of Bingzhou, and took over the military affairs of Liangzhou. The former subjects of Wei Kang, Yang Fu, Jiang Xu, Liang Kuan, Zhao Qu etc., plotted together to attack Ma Chao. Yang Fu and Jiang Xu revoted at Lucheng; Ma Chao besieged it but could not take it; Liang Kuan and Zhao Qu closed the gates of Yicheng and Ma Chao could not enter. [He] was in a difficult position in advance and retreat, and thus fled to Hanzhong to Zhang Lu. Zhang Lu was not equal to matters of strategem, and stayed in the city; on hearing that the Former Lord had surrounded Liu Zhang at Chengdu, sent a secret letter requesting surrender.
