Background
At the end of Eastern Han, the government was weakened by corruption and the constant fighting for power between relatives and eunuchs. During this period of time, one emperor was replaced by another. Many tyrants emerged from this brief period of time. Many emperors even ruled in fear because they were controlled by others. Some as young as 3 month-old ruled the Eastern Han. Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian all fought for the government in the battles that defeated the rebels. All three of them were rewarded and placed in different parts of the country with different positions.

The Han dynasties are originally ruled by the Liu families. Liu Bei was thus said to have been a descendent of one of the emperors. That was one reason why he wanted to revive the Han dynasty. Liu Bei succeeded in building a kingdom with the help of the master strategist, Zhuge Liang. Among the three kingdoms that formed at the end of 220 A.D, Wei had 14 provinces, Wu had 4 and Shu only had one.
