The Great Wall

The northern central plains of China were often invaded by Nomads during the early years of Qin. To fend off these invasions, Qin shihuang set out to build a great wall. This wall, after rebuilding during the Dynasty of Ming, is said to be the only man-made monument that is viewable from the Moon.

The Great Wall of Qin is massive enough -- about 3000 miles (4,828 km). This is the original Great Wall and still exists. It crosses some of China's most forbidding areas rises at the angle of 70 degrees in some sections.

Records showed that the Qin workers constructed about 25 miles (40 kms) of wall per month. Countless slaves worked under the burning sun and died for this ambitious work. It is estimated that if this wall were to be built today, it would cost approximately $260 billion US. Because of this huge financial need, the great wall gave Qin huge financial burdens as well as lost of human lives. The building of the Great Wall gave rise to many resentments of the people against the first emperor of Qin.
