The Castle

The castle is known as the castle of good hope. The castle was built between 1666 and 1679. The castle  replaced a small timber  and clay fort built by Jan van Riebeek in 1652.The castle is now the oldest surviving building in South Africa. It has 5 bastions leading out from the out from the walls. The bastions where named after the main titles of Willem, the Prince of Orange. The names are Nassau, Oranje, Leerdam, Buren and Catzenellenbogen.

Now days part of the castle is used as the Western Cape military command headquarters and else where it is a museum. In the museum there is a collection of carpets, porcelain and paintings of the William Fehr collection.

The bell tower

The bell above was cast in 1697 by Claude Fremy in Amsterdam. The bell still hangs in the tower from its original wooden beams
