Edward White II,
the
American astronaut who became the first American to walk in space when he
stepped from the Gemini 4 capsule in 1965. He was designated the senior
pilot of Apollo 1, scheduled for launch in February 1967. A flash fire
during a training exercise killed White and two other astronauts.
White was tethered to
the Gemini 4 space capsule by a lifeline that supplied him with oxygen. In
his right hand is a small rocket powered by compressed gas to help him
manoeuvre in space.
