Edward White II, the American astronaut who became the first American to walk in space when he stepped from the Gemini 4 capsule in 1965. He was designated the senior pilot of Apollo 1, scheduled for launch in February 1967. A flash fire during a training exercise killed White and two other astronauts.

      White was tethered to the Gemini 4 space capsule by a lifeline that supplied him with oxygen. In his right hand is a small rocket powered by compressed gas to help him manoeuvre in space.
