Since the first diagnosis of schizophrenia, physicians and researchers have tried consistently to develop a effective method to treat the disorder. Unfortunately, before the middle of the twentieth century, all types of treatments remained extremely unsuccessful. In 1950s, Dr. Henri Laborit, a French surgeon, discovered that chlorpromazine could reduce many symptoms of schizophrenia. By 1956, chlorpromazine was widely prescribed in the United States and Europe as an effectual medication to treat the disorder. Nowadays, physicians use antipsychotic medications to treat people with schizophrenia.
