The substitutes of precious stones
From the early ages, the Egyptians tried to find substitutes of precious stones like Iceland spar to set with the golden works, also from the IVth dynasty they made crystalline lapis blue material which is known as Egyptian Blue and it may be used in many pieces of jewellery of El-Lahun.
Also they made frit and they used it as beads until the beginning of New Kingdom.
Glass
It was composed of silicate-soda-lime, the oldest example of glass work which was painted on it the name of Tuthmosis III.
Sometimes they coloured the glass so they used it instead of the semi-precious stones like in many pieces of the collection of Tutankhamun.
