Holiday is connected with Easter and it is celebrated on the last Sunday before Easter. It opens the period of six days called the Saint Week.
On this day Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem and enormous crowd of people bearing pal leaves and crying "Hosanna" met him. The triumphal entering Jerusalem was the unique moment of glory for Jesus - Christ who was followed by humiliation, crucifixion, death and resurrection. On the Mediterranean coast people keep ancient tradition to use palms leaves.
In some countries where there aren't any palms people use willow branches instead. In Lorraine and Alsace they use fur-tree branches. These branches are symbol of hope. They are brought home from the church and kept up to the next Rameaux. They save houses from evil and misfortune.
