Bats ~ are the only mammal that can fly.

Lemurs ~ only live on the island of Madagascar, off the East African shore.

Giraffes ~ although their neck could stretch to 2 metres, they only have 7 bones - same as humans!

Elephants ~ use their trunks as snorkels when they cross deep rivers.

Antelopes ~ can jump long distances to escape predators.

Rhinoceroses ~ are an endangered species because they were hunted and killed for their horns.

Tapirs ~ Are striped and spotted for camoflage.

Cheetahs ~ can run at a speed of up to 50 miles per hour.

Prairie Dogs ~ live in big underground colonies called towns.

Meerkats ~ stand on their hind legs and give shrill cries to warn others if danger is aproaching.

Gorillas ~ are the biggest of the ape family.

Chimpanzees ~ are one of the cleverest creatures in the world.

Orangutans ~ from the forests of Borneo and Sumatra, they get their name from the local name for "old man of the woods"

Hippopotamuses ~ they have the biggest mouth of all the animals.

Gazelles ~ are a type of antelope, but they are smaller and faster.

Lions ~ a male lion could drag a 300 kg zebra - it would take 6 men to do this.

Lorises ~ are a part of the primate family , similar to lemurs.

Pottas ~ are also primates and also brilliant climbers.

Bush babies ~ nocturnal animals, get their name because their cry sounds like a human baby crying.

Leopards ~ a collection of leopards is called a leap.

Aardvarks ~ can shovel the ground as fast as a mechanical digger!

Camels ~ have the worst smelling breath in the whole animal kingdom.

Oxen ~ get their name from the Icelandic "uxe" or "oxe" and the Sanskrit "uksham".

Buffalos ~ live in herds which gaze on the Savanna of Africa.

Bison ~ are a type of buffalo, native of Africa.

Water Rats ~ are mouse- like rodents who are excellent swimmers.

Armadillos ~ have a  hard armour-like shell made of skin.

Zebra ~ have stripped markings so that when they are chased by a predator, the herd runs together, changing direction, the blur of stripes will confuse the predator.
