Robben Island

Robben island first gained infamy and disrepute as a prison for eastern exiles, spiritualists and slaves.  Thus Robben island becomes very much a part of the history of the Muslims of South Africa.

Tuan Matarah (Sayed Abdurahman Motura)

Also known as Sayed Abduraghman Motura, Tuan Matarah was presumed to have been a very religious and erudite man.  He spread the significance of Islam and comforted those facing difficulties.  Many legends surround him, as he was known for his wondrous medicinal cures and comfort he brought his companions when they were ill.  The most peculiar legend was that he walked across the water to visit his companions in Cape Town.

Tuan Matarah died and was buried on the island.  His grave became a respected shrine when those who knew him came to meditate and search for solace for their distress.  Others followed their example and many visit his tomb even now.
