-There are 80 lighting strikes around the world in a minute.

-There are 8 milllion lightning strikes each day.

- In The United States there are 20 million lightning strikes each year.

How Far Way is Lighting From You?

In order to find out how far away lightining is away from you, use the "Flash and Bang Method."

1. During a thunderstorm wait for the lightning flash.

2. Count how many seconds elapse until a thunder crash.

3. Divide the number of seconds elapsed by 5.

-Some people have been struck by lighting over 20 times in their life time.

- The average annual per capita strike rate in the United States is around 1 in 600,000

- Approximately One death occurrs for every 345,000 lightning flashes

- The average lightning flash would light a 100 watt light bulb for 3 months.
- The corridor from Tampa Bay, FL to Lakeland, FL receives the most lightning in the United States, 90% of the lightning in this area occurs from May through September, between the hours of noon and midnight
