Major blizzards

USA - 1888

This was probably the most prominent of all blizzards to hit the USA, even to this day. From Jan 11-13 it snowed and snowed. An average of 40 inches of snow fell in this small period of time. In Herald Square, New York, snow drifts were up to 30 feet high! To make matters worse, there were winds of up to 70 mph gusting when the ground was allready 0 degrees farenheit. This made the windchill temperature be about -70 degrees farenheit!!! Over 400 people died, and many more animals died during this disaster.

Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast - 1895

Over two feet of snow is deposited on the ground in this major blizzard in a very short amount of time.

Southern Plains, USA - 1899

A major cold front causes the southern plains to have the coldest morning in history. The cold also brought blizzards.

New York City - 1947

A giant snow storm hits New York and deposits 26.4 inches of snow. This was the record amount for New York and is 5 inches more than what fell in the blizzard of 1888.

Midwest/Eastern USA- 1950

This blizzard was given the nickname "The Appalachian Storm", and caused up to 62 inches of snow in some spots. The winds also were up to 100 mph.

New York City - 1977

Buffalo New York is bombarded with 40 straight days of snow, and is then extremely hit by a blizzard at the end of the snow time. It was the first place declared a Federal Disaster Area because of snow.

Boston, Massachusetts - 1978

In 1978, the blizzard deposited over 27 inches of snow. It was so much, that the governor outlawed traveling for a week.

Western China -1989

Over 69 people died in a major blizzard in Western China. The really odd thing about this storm was that it occured in the middle of summer- June/July!!

New York City and Washington DC - 1996

A blizzard dropped almost 24 inches of snow, causing the whole Federal Government to be shut down for a day.
