  Careers Related to Meteorology

There are a few careers related to meteorology. The most obvious of which is probably being a meteorologist. Other than that there is storm chasing, which according to our research, is not what people expect. Anyways, we have included as much information as we could, along with some links.

Meteorology is probably the best field. It is the study of weather. The american meteorological soceity says that a meteorologist is a meteorologist because they have a "specialized education and uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe, or forecast the earth's atmospheric phenomena and/or how the atmosphere affects the earth and life on the planet". There are three main jobs for a meteorologist, teaching, forecasting, and researching. Information about government jobs can be found at the NOAA (Click here).

Sure the job sounds great... but whats it pay?? Information from a 1993 survey. Got the information from [here]. This is an average, and may not be actual payment.
Private companies - $45,000 - $60,000
Government - $40,000 - $60,000
Forecasters - $30,000 - $40,000 (not exactly, some were over 100,000)
Colleges - $30,000 - $40,000

Here is a list of some companies who hire meteorologists:

There is a lot of information about beging a meteorologist here:

From our research, this seems to be a sort of dream job. It apparently should be more like a hobby, because it doesn't pay very well, if at all. Every site we went to showed either negative profits or minimal profits. Apparently, there are no schools that teach storm chasing, and one person says that he invests about $1,000 anually. He also suggests to go into a career like meteorology, not storm chasing. His webpage and FAQ about Storm Chasing can be found at: http://www.jacksonville.net/~persoffj/faq.html.

We did find one webiste about a program at the college of DuPage on storm chasing. it can be found here: http://weather.cod.edu/chasing/stormchase.html

Heres another Storm Chasing site: http://www.stormchase.com/

Well, to be honest, we coulden't find any information about actual Storm Chasing Careers, and most pages considered it a hobby, where you lose more money than you make. It sounds like a very expensive hobby, and the only payoff is when you sell media to the press and television stations, and even then, its not often, and not much $. Therefore, our advice to you if you really want to do something involving weather, is be a meteorologist!!
