The White Temple c. 3500 - 3000 BCE

The White Temple is a ziggurat - a temple raised on a large platform
  • Raised up above the common level from which announcements came down from the gods
  • It symbolizes an artificial mountain upon which one may be higher and closer to the gods.
  • Mountains are seen as sacred places throughout many cultures
  • Mt. Olympus in Greece, San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff

Only priests went up the ziggurat/mountain to attend to the god and to hear their decrees. Then they delivered the god's wish to the populace. Public ceremonies were held at the base of the temple/mountain (Moses and the Ten Commandments)
