Fashion In Mesopotamia

Workers wore loose like skirts when working to keep cool, plus they get wet. Also it is tough material. Kaunakes is a type of skirt worn by many men Sumerians.

Some believe they were made with sheepskin or cloth covered with many rows of wool fringe.

They had no top. Assyrians usually put fringe on their clothes. King Ashurasirph II wore a wavy style beard and long curled hair.

Women usually wore a layered dress with a cover at the waist. It was short sleeved with no breast coverage.

They wove fine cloth which was no doubt used for clothing. The women also wore tunics and sandals. Women often wore folwers like the picture above.

Women wore a cape like garment in addition to the Kaunakes.

The Assyrians and Babylonians wore chiefly a large shawl or scarf wrapped around the waist and hips.

They draped one end over the left shoulder.

The Assyrians and some Babylonians wore a short sleeve tunic under the shawl.

Think & Quest

  • What can fashion bring to one society?
  • Have you ever been after any fashion?
